China’s DeepSeek Disrupts AI Race — Or Does It?
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab, introduced an AI model that reportedly rivals OpenAI’s — but is 20 to 50 times cheaper and free. OpenAI acknowledged “real competition,” but experts remain skeptical due to DeepSeek’s opacity around training data. Some suspect it leveraged U.S. models, raising doubts about its true capabilities. Despite the buzz, OpenAI and Anthropic continue to be seen as the leading forces in the field, particularly in terms of innovation and safety.

Supersonic Travel Without the Boom
Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 broke the sound barrier three times on January 28 without a sonic boom. That’s thanks to the Mach cutoff — a phenomenon where shock waves deflect upward at high altitudes instead of reaching the ground. Many countries banned supersonic flights due to disruptive booms, leading to Concorde’s retirement in 2003. Boom Supersonic plans to apply these findings to its future commercial jet. However, experts note Mach-cutoff flight burns more fuel, making it less practical for airlines but viable for business jets.
