Matt Caspari, managing partner of Strawberry Creek Ventures, presented an overview of the UC Berkeley-focused fund under Alumni Ventures, highlighting their goal of building wealth for Berkeley alumni by creating diversified portfolios of 20-30 venture-backed startups. With over 30,000 members in their community, the fund leverages the expansive Alumni Ventures network, which includes more than 600,000 alumni from top universities, to access and invest in promising opportunities. Matt outlined their rigorous investment evaluation process, which uses a scorecard methodology to assess deal dynamics, lead investors, company performance, and team quality. He emphasized their co-investor role, collaborating with well-known venture firms like Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz. He also shared details on how their strong alumni network provides value beyond capital, aiding startups in various ways. With the current Fund 8 open for investment, he encouraged interested parties to learn more and consider joining by the upcoming closing dates, emphasizing the long-term nature and potential high returns of venture capital investing.

Matt Caspari

Managing Partner, Strawberry Creek Ventures

Matt Caspari is a Managing Partner at Alumni Ventures, where he leads the Deep Tech, Georgetown (Potomac Ventures) and UC Berkeley (Strawberry Creek Ventures) funds. He invests in mission-driven founders developing groundbreaking technologies. His investments encompass a diverse range of sectors, including AI, agriculture, aviation, battery technology, cybersecurity, direct air capture of CO2, energy generation, longevity, and robotics. Prior to Alumni Ventures, Matt gained operational experience as a two-time venture-backed founder/CEO and as a leader of the innovation team at Nike. He was the founding CEO of Aurora Biofuels, a deep tech venture that grew to 100+ employees, secured over $100 million in funding and was acquired by Reliance Industries. In earlier roles, Matt served as a strategic management consultant at Cambridge Pharma Consultancy, later acquired by IMS Health, and gained experience on the M&A team at Bloomberg. He holds a BS in Biochemistry from Georgetown University and an MBA with a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from UC Berkeley.

Carl brings a systems-level mindset to early-stage investing, shaped by two decades of experience across public equities, M&A, and venture capital. He focuses on foundational technologies that rewire how the real world operates—betting on enduring platforms in climate, infrastructure, space, and enterprise systems. His work is rooted in a belief that innovation at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds is key to building a more equitable and sustainable future.

At Alumni Ventures, Carl is an investor focused on backing companies that tilt markets and drive systemic change. He is particularly drawn to mission-driven founders leveraging deep technical insight to unlock hidden efficiencies, build climate-resilient infrastructure, and reshape legacy systems.

Carl’s career prior to Alumni Ventures includes roles as Principal at Solasta Ventures, where he led deep tech and enterprise software investments, and as a corporate development lead at Upwork. He also held M&A roles at Riverbed Technology and began his finance career at London Capital Management before transitioning into investment banking at J.P. Morgan in the Bay Area.

Originally from Korea and Canada, Carl holds a double degree in Mathematics and Business Administration from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, and an MBA from UC Berkeley Haas. Outside of work, you’ll find him on the soccer field or at the poker table, enjoying spirited competition and strategic play.
